शतमश्वानृते हन्ति सहस्रं तु गवानृते ।
आत्मानं स्वजनं हन्ति पुरुषः पुरुषानृते ॥

अन्वयः

पुरुषः man, अश्वानृते tells a lie about a horse, शतम् hundred, हन्ति kills, गवानृते tells a lie about a cow, सहस्रम् thousand, पुरुषानृते a lie about a man, आत्मानम् himself, स्वजनम् his own people, हन्ति kills.

He that speaks a falsehood with reference to a horse, becomes guilty of the deaths of an hundred horses: he committing himself to a falsehood relative to a cow, reapeth the demerit of slaying a thousand kine; while he that uttereth an untruth touching a person, destroys self as well as his kindred.

Summary

'If a man tells a lie about a horse, he commits the sin of killing a hundred horses. If one tells a lie about a cow, he shares the sin of killing a thousand cows. If one tells a lie about a man, it is equal to the sin of killing oneself and his own people.
