६.५१.९

धर्ममर्थं च कामं च सर्वान्वा रक्षसां पते ।
भजते पुरुषः काले त्रीणि द्वन्द्वानि वा पुनः ॥

अन्वयः

रक्षसांपते Rakshasa king, पुरुषः man, धर्मम् duty, अर्थं च worldly gain, कामं च sensual pleasures, सर्वान्वा or all, त्रीणि three, द्वन्द्वानिवा at least two, काले in time, भजते should pursue.

The king that aided by his own intelligence as well as his counsellors act after reflection in consonance with the science of polity, that distinguish his friends from his foes), and, O lord of the Raksasas, that seasonably' pursue righteousness, or profit, or desire, or any two, or all these combined-truly has understanding.? १. Religion is to be sought in the morning, profit in the afternoon, and desire at nigh, so the commentator. २. One is at sea in the midst of these formless generalities. The tantalized intellect makes a desperate attempt to grasp the body of the shadow seeming substance, but the empty air mocks his pains. A translator, however, is fast bound to the oar and must pull on, will be, nil he.

Summary

"O Rakshasa king! A man should pursue his duty or worldly gain or sensual pleasures all the three combined or at least any two in time (the scriptures lay down that duty should be pursued in the morning, wealth in the afternoon and sensual pleasures at night)."
